Tommy Godbold had an unusual rise to candidacy for Mardi Gras King- he began as a jester for Mardi Gras 7 years ago. After he was approached to join the Mardi Gras committee, he was quickly promoted to take on the very important role of Mardi Gras jester- to promote Mardi Gras at Chamber of Commerce events and entertain the crowd during the event ceremonies. His presence is synonmous with the fun and flair of the annual New Orleans festival, and the United Way Mardi Gras event would not be the same without him. But this year he has chosen a new role to play as... candidate for
King of the United Way Mardi Gras. In 2008, Tommy was the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year award, and the United Way Mardi Gras Award. "I work hard on the committees I help with, and I want to help spread the word about United Way with this campaign. It doesn't matter whether I win or lose, I will still keep helping in Calvert County."
In his campaign to become King, Tommy has raffled a big screen TV, MD Coach Gary Williams signed-basketball, and a suite at the Show Place Arena. Upcoming fundraising events include an Ultimate Ladies Night Raffle, and a raffle drawing/party at Jake & Al's in Lusby on February 28, from 7 pm to close.
